About This Site
This blog is the 1.5 version of my old website, which had personal entries, study guides, and advice (which I have been able to move to this site). This blog intends to do the same and has a mild focus on:
- entrepreneurship (thoughts on running a web startup),
- the encounters I have (with people, places, or things),
- and the ensuing exhortations (advice/lessons learned- think study guides for college except for life).
About Me
Right now. I’m a poor web entrepreneur who’s bootstrapping (the quintessential startup guys working out of a garage) in Washington D.C. We started our company while still in college (CMC) with our first product being Fantasy Congress which received widespread news attention (see the Press section) and made us eschew the traditional choices of employment. We have since created Kingmaker, a presidential primaries election game with the Politico. As a startup, our main goal is to experiment and see what sticks (and then run with it!)– whether that is in the world of politics, media, mobile, the social web, friendship bracelets with news, or galactic battleships.
For me, this new adventure means deferring my Truman Scholarship and doing something completely different from what I’d intended. I’m primarily concerned with making an impact and you’ll hear some of that in this blog. It’s definitely not easy. Hopefully, you’ll get a feeling for that on this site (and not because there is a lack of posts).
More About Me. Other themes you may read about:
Politics, Politics 2.0, Public Service, and Government. Before I began my foray into startups and entrepreneurship, I was following the well-trodden path of public service. I had previously worked for the Rose Institute of State and Local Government, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in their Natural Resources and Environment Division, and also worked for the EPA in the Office of Policy, Economics, and Innovation. I am a member of the Open House Project and am fiercely interested in politics, transparency, and how to improve government accountability (through tech and other means).
College and PPE. I went to college at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA where I majored in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). My foundation in these three topics help to inform this blog.
Colorado and Environmentalism. I was born and raised in Colorado where I graduated from IB at Lakewood High School.
In the summer of 2004, I received a Political Education Fellowship, which gave me the opportunity to work for Senator Ken Salazar on the 2004 Colorado U.S. Senate race in the Research/Media/Policy portions of the race. As a result of these experiences, I talk about great things about Colorado, whether its business, community, politics, or environmentalism (look to the right).
Geek Culture- Superheroes, Gadgets, Games, and Space. I’m nerdy a lot, so you’ll see me blog about superheroes, gadgets and space.
Family, Faith, Philosophy, and Heritage. It’s easier to speculate naively (as many “leaders” in my generation do) about changing the world (through politics or business), than to think about the things that really matter: having a family, holding a good job, making sure my children know the value of a dollar, taking care of my health, and volunteering to make my community a better place. At the same time, we are the product of our history and our eventual impact on the world is also important. The correct balance between these two spheres requires much philosophical inspection. All I know is that I’m working toward these goals and I would give anything to be a good person with a good family.
